COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is the third quarter of a three quarter sequence of Intermediate German. Our primary goal is the continued development of proficiency and refinement of all German language skills. This quarter, special emphasis will be given to reading and performing skills. A key-feature will be the production of skits by students, culminating in the popular Evening of Skits at the end of the quarter.
THEME: The theme for the quarter is History and the Present. We will discuss life in the modern city, dimensions of nature and the animal kingdom, approaches to history in the German-speaking countries, and multiculturalism.
READINGS: We will concentrate on one major reading selection, Thomas Brussig’s delightfully humorous, historically relevant novel Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee. A screening of the corresponding film will be arranged.
MULTIMEDIA: Students will again engage with the web-based video series Drehort: Neubrandenburg and its fascinating perspective on daily life in Post-Wende Germany. The program includes interactive multimedia software to enhance listening comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. Important grammar points will be reviewed, and students will be able to practice them through the web-based, interactive grammar Intermatik.
PREREQUISITES: 102-2 or equivalent. P/N not permitted.
TEACHING METHOD: A variety of teaching techniques are used. Classroom activities are designed to provide students with the opportunity to practice new material in communicative situations including role-plays, group-based tasks, and discussions.
EVALUATION METHOD: Final grades are based on: 1) Attendance and participation 2) Four unit tests 3) Writing assignments based on Drehort Neubrandenburg and reading text 4) Intermatik Assignments 5) Skit preparation and performance.
