Building History: One-half of a duplex structure, 600 Lincoln opened in the fall of 1959 at the same time as Elder Hall. The duplex was designed by Holabird, Root, and Burgee and built at a cost of $330,000. Each half of the corridor-style structure was intended to house 47 men. When 600 Lincoln opened, it served as the new home of Tau Delta Phi, a fraternity chapter founded at Northwestern in 1923. By the 1960s Tau Delta Phi had become one of the most diverse fraternities at Northwestern, with a membership that included Jewish and African American students. The fraternity closed in 1976, and 600 Lincoln later became the coeducational residence hall it is today.
