Hinman House Residence Hall - 81
610 Lincoln Street Evanston Campus 60201 Building History: In 1914 the original Hinman House was located at 2313 Sheridan Road as a nonfraternity residential unit of the men’s quadrangle. The students living there called themselves the Hinman Friars. In 1999 the all-male Hinman House community was moved from 2313 Sheridan to 610 Lincoln and became coeducational. The new Hinman House facility is half of a duplex structure that opened in the fall of 1959 along with Elder Hall. Designed by Holabird, Root, and Burgee and built at a cost of $330,000, the 600-610 Lincoln duplex was intended to house 47 men in each half of the hall. For 31 years (1959-90) Acacia fraternity members called 610 Lincoln home. After Acacia closed, Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity resided in the facility from 1991 to 1997, after which the building was used as a co-ed residence hall. Hinman House was named in honor of Clark T. Hinman, the first president of Northwestern. Born in New York, Mr. Hinman was a representative of Michigan Conference of the Methodist Church and served on Northwestern’s Board of Trustees. He was named University president by the Board of Trustees in 1853 at the age of 32. Unfortunately, Mr. Hinman became ill and died in 1854 before any students enrolled at Northwestern.
